Lexington One's Chinese Summer ProgramS offered through STARTALK
Lexington One did not offer a summer STARTALK program in 2014 due to changes in the program at the federal level. We hope to be able to offer this amazing
opportunity to our learners again next year!
Information about the 2013 summer STARTALK program is still available here:
Lexington One offers STARTALK for Schools of the Future — Now! Chinese Language Summer Program
In June, Lexington County School District One will offer language camps for all students in Grades 7-12 in the
Midlands. Students interested in learning Chinese can attend the camps at no cost thanks to a grant Lexington One received from STARTALK.
This summer program supports Lexington One’s expansion of the world language curriculum to include Chinese
language courses in several middle and high schools in the district. It provides creative, intensive language experiences that give students opportunities to learn Chinese culture and basic language functions. During the program, students
will participate in fun and meaningful activities and learn using interactive technology.
What is STARTALK?
STARTALK is a component of the National Security Language Initiative (NSLI) programs announced by former
President George W. Bush in January 2006. The initiative seeks to expand and improve the teaching and learning of strategically important world languages that are not widely taught in the United States at this time.
STARTALK’s mission is to increase the number of Americans learning, speaking and teaching critical-need world
languages by offering students and teachers of these languages creative and engaging summer experiences that strive to exemplify best practices in language education and in language teacher development. These experiences form an
extensive community of practice that seeks continuous improvement in such criteria as outcome-driven program design, standards-based curriculum planning, learner-centered approaches, excellence in selection and development of
materials, and meaningful assessment of outcomes.
